One Last Time
Monique |
Monday, July 23, 2012 at 12:25AM I woke up that morning anticipating.
I missed my period, by a day, but it was still missed, and the ticker I'd set up to count down the days until the two week wait was over said "an at home test may work today", so I did the sensible thing and waited an extra day.
"Saturday." I said on Thursday. "If a new cycle doesn't start by Saturday, I'm taking a test."
Christian nodded.
The liquid quickly went past the "test" line, and nothing showed up. As the "control" line darkened, I placed the stick flat, looking at what a positive result would have read on its wrapper, and cleaned up.
I wasn't disappointed, I hadn't expected us to conceive on our first try, and I geared myself up to wait for the impending beginning of my cycle. Which would probably occur later the same day because life likes it when you waste pregnancy tests.
It took me less than a minute to get everything squared away, I took my hair out of its sock bun and admired the fluffiness. Two minutes had passed, at most, and I took one last look at the test to see that a line had clearly, though not darkly, developed where there was none before.
My heart skipped a beat.
I held it closer to the light, just to make sure, and yes.
There was a line, there are two.
For a moment I debate not telling Christian immediately, and doing something grandiose to announce it when he got home from work.
This is {hopefully} the last time I get to say these words to him, and odds are he wouldn't remember what I'd said about Saturday anyway.
But if he did, I'd have to lie, and it wasn't worth the risk.
I called him in and he gave my hair a thumbs up, I showed him the tiny stick and he squinted.
"So... does this mean that you're not?" he asked.
I shook my head. "No, look. There are two lines... I am."
A smile slowly creeps on his face, he embraces me, kisses me fiercely and says;
"I told you!"
We marveled together for a moment or two more, not lingering too long because the boys were awake.
This is it.
If all goes as we hope it does, this pregnancy is our final one, unequivocally. The decision was made a long time ago, and it is one that we are certain of.
I have never been good at keeping my own secrets, or very patient for that matter.
A second test confirmed on Sunday.
We told the Minions, we told our Moms, and now, we tell all of you!

{A HUGENORMOUS thank you to Cody of Lu & Ed for our beloved monster friends!}
We are over the moon, and ready to experience pregnancy - one last time.
